Alcohol-Free Wine — De-alcoholized, Gentle, with Character

Alcohol-free wine is no longer a last resort. Those who want to experience a Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pinot Noir without alcohol will find artisan products at ginussland.com, where the aromas and acid structure of the original wine remain discernible even after de-alcoholization. This is not a given — it's the result of a gentle process and carefully selected grapes.

How is alcohol-free wine produced?

The journey to alcohol-free wine begins just like classic wine: the grapes are harvested, pressed, and fermented. The finished wine is then gently freed from alcohol in a vacuum distillation at low temperatures. The vacuum lowers the boiling point of alcohol, so heat-sensitive aromas are largely preserved. What remains is a wine that is only missing one component — all other sensory impressions are still there.

Which alcohol-free wines can you find at genussland?

Goodvines is a German manufacturer specializing entirely in alcohol-free wine. Their line covers classic grape varieties from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot Rosé to Sauvignon Blanc. In winter, an alcohol-free mulled wine is added as a sparkling and still variant.

The Manufaktur Jörg Geiger from Schlat in the district of Göppingen offers single-varietal alcohol-free wines under the name Grad-Linie — named after the temperature at which they are de-alcoholized: 32° Riesling, 33° Pinot Meunier, 35° Sauvignon Blanc, 36° Grenache, and 37° Pinot Noir. In a vacuum, the alcohol already evaporates at these low temperatures, and each wine receives exactly the temperature that best preserves its aromatics. Each wine is made from grapes of a single vineyard and a single grape variety, fermented, and then de-alcoholized. In addition, Manufaktur Jörg Geiger offers the Edition Lamothe as an alcohol-free cuvée.

Oliver Zeter from the Palatinate region contributes another de-alcoholized white wine with the Zero Hero Sauvignon Blanc 0%.

Frequently asked questions about alcohol-free wine

Which alcohol-free wine really tastes like wine?
White wines and sparkling wines today achieve a high standard, as their aromas and acid structure withstand de-alcoholization well. The manufacturers in our assortment — Goodvines and Manufaktur Jörg Geiger — work with carefully selected grapes and gentle processes, so the wines retain their varietal character. This is more challenging for red wines, because body and tannins are closely linked to alcohol — accordingly, it is even more valuable when a red wine like the Geiger 37° Pinot Noir shows its fruit and structure even without alcohol.

What do the degree numbers in the Geiger Grad-Linie mean?
They indicate the temperature at which the wine is de-alcoholized. Under vacuum, the boiling point of alcohol drops so low that it already evaporates at just over 30 °C — and each grape variety gets the temperature that best preserves its aromatics. The Riesling is de-alcoholized at 32 °C, the Pinot Noir at 37 °C.

What does 0.0 percent mean for alcohol-free wine?
In Germany, the term "alcohol-free" allows for a residual alcohol content of up to 0.5 volume percent. Those who want to completely abstain from alcohol should look for the indication "0.0 %" — this is below the food law detection limit. In our assortment, the labeling is indicated on each product.

Which glass suits alcohol-free wine?
The glass follows the grape variety, not the alcohol content. An alcohol-free Riesling belongs in a Riesling glass, a Pinot Noir in a Burgundy glass, a Sauvignon Blanc in a tapered white wine glass. The correct shape emphasizes the varietal aromas and underlines the wine's quality.

Does alcohol-free wine last as long as alcoholic wine?
An unopened bottle of alcohol-free wine will keep for one to two years when stored in a dark, cool place. Once opened, alcohol-free wine is slightly more sensitive than wine with alcohol — we recommend drinking an opened bottle within two to three days and storing it in the refrigerator.
